Citadel. It is July 1943. Stalingrad, against all odds, has held.

In an attempt to regain the initiative, the Germans plan a major offensive. Operation Citadel will be a two-pronged attack into the Kursk salient. Hitler knows that the entire Eastern Front hangs in the balance.

But British intelligence has alerted the Soviets to the German plan and a massive defense in depth is planned. Soviet High Command, however, is still acutely aware that they have never been able to halt a German panzer breakthrough.

The Soviets gain extra time to strengthen their lines as the Germans delay the start of the offensive, waiting for more heavy Tiger tanks and the new Panthers to reach the front.

It will be the largest clash of armor ever seen. Thousands of tanks will be committed to battle. And the world will watch as the fate of the war is decided on the smoke-shrouded fields outside of a village named Prokhorovka....
The Guns of April historical gaming club plans a triumphant return to AdeptiCon in 2016 with a game of epic proportions. Using Warlord's Bolt Action Tank War supplement, the group intends to present a massive Battle of Kursk game, pitting Tiger against T-34 in a historical showdown.

Preparations have already begun and the level of enthusiasm is high. Models are ordered, Orders of Battle are being written up, and reference books are being studied. More details will follow shortly. Until then,
After much planning and work on those of us involved real life took over and forced us to cancel our planned Battle of Marston Moor game. So instead, we took the opportunity to recreate some of the more relaxing elements of the English Civil War.

Rest assured though, we have plans to do this battle next year at Adepticon. In addition, our hope is to make this a participation game so that people can join in on the fun. Stay tuned to this blog for details as they become available.
In the meantime, check back for some exciting news about a new exhibition game we have in the works.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14723565744491156292noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2114823305082004214.post-39717600819451166542014-12-05T17:25:00.002-08:002014-12-05T17:26:38.962-08:00Raising The Regiments

Adepticon is only 4 months away so it's time to get this project up to speed. For me, my first task was to re-base my existing Royalists units and add a few models to flesh out some under strength units. My one fully complete unit was my regiment of Rubert's Bluecoats. The only thing missing is another sleeve of 12 shot. These are all primed and should come along quickly.

My artillery expanded with the addition of a second cannon (A Saker to be exact). If time permits, I may add a mortar as well.

Finally, I had originally painted this unit with the thoughts of making it Lord Goring's foot. Since this regiment was not involved at Marston Moor, my plan is to find a substitute regiment for these models to represent. One of the nice things about gaming the English Civil War period is that uniforms are not always standard other than some unifying color and many units tended to dress alike, on both side of the war. A problem for the fighting men of the period but something that makes building a historical regiment a little easier for the miniature gamer.
All the models above are from Old Glory and I have some additional primed models I can use to add my missing sleeve of shot for Rubert's Bluecoats as well as a unit of mounted Dragoons. Those are next on the painting table. After that, I'll be moving on to the plastic models I have from the Warlord Games range. My hope is that keeping similar manufacturers lines in separate units/regiments will help deal with any scale issues that might be visible. I guess we'll see.

I was very disappointed about missing Adepticon in 2014 but it was for a very good reason. Now that I am back on schedule I was fully behind our 2015 project representing the English Civil War and the Battle of Marston Moor. I was very eager to defend the righteous King from the upstart Fairfax, Cromwell and the Parliament dogs. This is my first go at collecting and painting an ECW army but one thing I wanted to be sure of was to keep things very simple. My painting responsibility includes the following:

3x units of 16 pike
6x units of 24 shotte
2x units of 12 cavalry
1x unit of 10 Dragoons
1x unit of 12 Cuirassiers
1x cannon
1x General
2x Brigade Generals

Lots to paint and March is just around the corner. Here is my first progress report. I am base coating my army, giving them a wash of the Army Painter 'dip', and hitting them with a dull coat. If I have time I will go back in and give them a highlight but overall I am happy with the look 'as is'. They won't win any painting competitions but they will look fine on the table.
I came to our game at Adepticon 2014, ready to discuss ideas for our 2015 event. I had already mentioned to the group my own interest in the English Civil War, but assumed it wouldn't hold much interest for others, as I haven't encountered a lot of folks who game the period. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised to find many in our group to be fans of the period and others more than willing to give it a go.

So, 2015 will see us recreate The Battle of Marston Moor in 28mm. For me, I couldn't be more excited. ECW was my first foray into historical miniature gaming and probably due to that, it has always been a favorite period for me.

So, stay tuned as we bring you updates of the groups progress as well as more information on the period and the battle itself. And of course, check out the finished project at Adepticon 2015!

My most humble apologies for not posting this sooner, but life has a way of being hectic when you least need it to be. But anyway, on to THE blog post about our Guns of April game at AdeptiCon 2014.

As we infrequently posted before the event, we chose to tackle a skirmish project for this year. Something that I feel was a double-edged sword. By electing to have everyone only paint 10-12 models (after our 120-150 model efforts the last few years) we could cut everyone's preparation time considerably, but this also meant that there wasn't that big rush of excitement as massive armies neared completion. Additionally, when you zoom in on skirmish action you must dial up the detail of the terrain. Our previous efforts (Salamanca 1812 and Gettysburg 1863) were relatively sparse on terrain, but I had a vision for Alexandria 1801 that I really wanted to see come to life. This meant that Alex Landing, Rob Chandler, and I had loads of work to do to pull it off successfully. When this crunch time arrived, we were simply too busy doing that we had no time to take photos and actively promote a sense of excitement amongst the rest of the team. That's all really a time management issue that we need to keep an eye on for future projects.

The end result, however, looks absolutely spectacular and completely fits with what I had in mind. I only wish I had taken as much time and care over the gaming preparations as I did the terrain.

Here are some photos from the night, captioned as appropriate.
Obviously I'd like to thank everyone involved in this game: the members of the Guns of April, Lon Weiss from Brigade Games (for sponsoring the event), Beth Landing (Alex's wife) for creating the rugs and 40+ throw pillows that were scattered around the table (each hand-stitched and filled with sand), and Alex Landing of Ironheart Artisans for all his great work designing the buildings that were the standout feature of the table.

Alex plans on having laser-cut MDF kits of these buildings available from his website in early May. I'll be sure to let you know when they are available.

Cheers
I've been terrible about posting photos of all the terrain we've been working on. I know how to shoot miniatures, but never quite get around to shooting the scenery I've painted. I'm expecting to spend quite a bit of time at the show rectifying that problem. In less than a week, the Guns of April group will have played a whole host of games over the spectacular terrain created by Rob Chandler and Alex Landing.

My apologies for the lack of posts during February, but it was certainly a crazy month. Not only did I resign from my position with Wargames Illustrated and start my own business (doing design/layout/editing - Dave Taylor Miniatures LLC), but I was working hard with my friends Alex and Rob to get the terrain built for the Guns Of April 2014 event - Scavenger Hunt: Napoleon In Egypt.

When the team agreed to go with a skirmish style gaming experience (only 10-12 models to paint, instead of 150), I knew we'd need to up the game as far as terrain was concerned. I know our previous games have looked great, but the terrain played a secondary role to the vast number of models on the table (close to 1,000 in each game I think). I had a dream, a vision, for what we could fight over, through, and around, but to make it a reality I had to turn to my friend Alex Landing (owner of Ironheart Artisans) for design help and vast amounts of laser cut buildings.

As luck should have it, Alex has actually been to Egypt, and had an extensive collection of photos of the wonderful architecture of Cairo and Alexandria. After a few basic design conversations, Alex leapt in with both feet and designed more than a dozen building styles to turn into close to 70 buildings for our gaming. Assembling the buildings took roughly three days and was accomplished by my buddy and fellow GOA member Rob Chandler and I in late February.

Following assembly, Rob took a couple of days to "basecoat" all of the buildings. You can see a healthy number of them below.
Rob and the guys at Dropzone Games couldn't help but put together a layout of buildings together and through down a few toy soldiers into the streets : )

Once their immersive fix had been sated, Rob packed up all the buildings into the largest box he could find, and Alex delivered it to my porch. After discovering the box in the morning, it was a bot like Christmas as I dived in and started piling them all up on my dining room table, much to my wife's bemusement and chagrin.

I started taking them to my painting table, four or five at a time, in order to start painting in the details. According to Alex (and my research), although the stucco-covered mud-brick buildings and sandstone block abodes might appear to be a bit dull, or samey, there is typically a great deal of colorful decoration, particularly on the well-kept houses of the wealthier citizens.

So, without further ado, here are some shots of the smaller houses (small footprint, single-story)
All of the roofs are removable, so action can move into the buildings : )

So, hopefully we'll have plenty more photos over the coming weeks. Only 21 more days and all this will be set up in the Westin Lombard hotel for AdeptiCon 2014!

Cheers
Well folks here we are back again. Presenting our projects for the 2014 installment of the Guns of April ! As you all have seen we are covering skirmish sized warbands for Napoleon in Egypt. Unlike last year where I posted numerous photos of the ACW project over many months, I decided to just make one post due to the smaller scope of this project.
For this years project I have the privalge to present you with my take on a British Royal Navy landing party with a detachment of Royal Marines. Below are some shots of the landing parties and Marines. The miniatures I used this year were from a few manufacturers. The Royal Navy officers and Jack Tars are from Brigade Games. The Royal Marines are a combo of Perry Miniatures plastic British Line Infantry with white metal Royal Marine heads from Victrix LTD.

Even though we've been a bit quiet lately, I know that all the members of the Guns Of April have been preparing for the "Napoleon in Egypt" game at AdeptiCon 2014. Here are the French Infantry models I've been working on over the last couple of months.

Above are a pair of grenadiers flanking a sergeant from the 69me Demi-Brigade de Ligne. The grenadiers are from Victrix, the sergeant is the dismounted Dromedary standard bearer from Brigade Games.

Here are three fusiliers from the 69me Demi-Brigade de Ligne, from Brigade Games' range of excellent Napoleonic miniatures.

Here are three chasseurs from the 22me Demi--Brigade de Legere

Three of the four French savants from Brigade. Excellent miniatures that will be very handy in our games. The fourth savant will end up on a vignette I'm planning to give away on the night : )

And six French sailors. Four of these are from Brigade's Napoleonic range, and the other two (rear center and rear right) are from a Victorian range by Brigade, but they certainly fit in.

And here's a look at all of the French Infantry I've painted up so far. These will be good for at least two Infantry warbands in our AdeptiCon gaming.

I hope you like them : )

Cheers

Yesterday I tried to post up these photos of my Dromedary Corps, along with their warband list for use with Legends of The High Seas. Sadly, Blogger saw fit to completely mess with the formatting of my "copy and paste" on the warband list and wouldn't let me correct it, no matter how hard I tried.

So, until I work it all out, you'll just get the pretty pictures.

Above is my Dromedary Corps warband (minus the Savant that will accompany them). These models are sculpted by Paul Hicks, and sold by Brigade Games as part of their excellent Napoleon In Egypt range.

For each of the mounted models, I painted up a matching model on foot (just in case their camel gets shot from underneath them). From left to right: The Captain (is his local attire), the ADC (in a dashing red, Hussar pelise), and two Dromedary Corps troopers.

Should they all end up on foot, they'll look something like this. I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I enjoyed painting the models, they were a real treat!

Merry Christmas, and see you all next year!

Cheers
Hello everyone. Its seems the Guns of April crew is off to a slow start for the 2014 event but behind the scenes we are working diligently towards our goal. When we completed our 2013 event portraying the first day actions at Gettysburg we all voted on what we would like to do for 2014. As previously mentioned we are going to run a skirmish level game of small warbands fighting it out in Egypt.

I took this opportunity to try a few new painting techniques after experiencing the time consuming painting process I used during our first project of the Battle of Salamanca. I primed my miniatures white rather than black which goes against everything I stand for when painting miniatures but since I was only painting 12 miniatures what the worse that could happen, right? :)

I tried another first by purchasing a bottle of the new Vallejo Model Wash Light Grey to see if it would make a nice wash for the white clothing and leather. After a few experimentations using the wash right out of the bottle wasn't giving me the right look so I added some Vallejo Gloss Varnish, water, and white glue for the desired result.
The miniatures are ready for some clean up but the wash allowed me to shade the white areas and it also showed me all the details on the miniature which was an added benefit. The next steps will be to begin basing all the colors to prepare the miniature for the Army Painter Dark Shade 'wash'.

Until next time.....
You could certainly be forgiven for thinking that we've all been on an extended summer vacation. Some of us did manage to escape for a bit, while others have been reveling in the joy that is new parenthood. Anyway, as the weather starts to turn cooler, we're about to turn our efforts back to preparations for Adepticon 2014!

Next year, the Guns of April efforts will be split (or doubled, depending on how you look at it) between two projects. The first is one that is led by Joe Krone, a man working on his first set of published rules for fighting in Eighteenth-Century North America. When Joe is ready, he'll jump in with what the project is all about.

The second project (led by yours truly) is all about skirmish battles in the streets of Alexandria, Egypt, in 1800 (or thereabouts). Inspired by a great article by Steve Dake on the Rosetta Stone published in WI294, I've conned Steve into writing even more for us, and worked with him on creating warbands (or "parties") for the turbulent time surrounding the discovery of the Rosetta Stone (and countless other antiquities).

Above you can see the start of my French Dromedary Corp party. Soon, very soon, they'll have camels too!

We've worked up eight party lists to be used with the Legends of the High Seas rules (from Warhammer Historical, and based on the Lord of The Rings rules). These lists are:

French:
• Dromedary Corp
• Infantry
• Cavalry
British:
• Royal Navy
• Army
Locals:
• Egyptians
• Ottoman Turks
• Mamelukes

I'm thinking that as we progress through this project I should post the lists to solicit feedback for you guys. What do you think?

Cheers
On the anniversary of The Battle of Gettysburg, I thought it was fitting to review a recently published book on the battle by a good friend, fellow gamer and avid historian, Iain C. Martin. The book is titled "Gettysburg: The True Account Of Two Young Heroes In The Greatest Battle Of The Civil War." The book is a 172 page hardcover book intended for the young adult reader and those new to the period and the battle. Iain has published a number of other books on various periods and you can find a more complete list of those at the following link.

Although intended for a young adult audience I found the book a fantastic reference on the battle. For those like myself who have a very general idea of the battle, I found the book gave a very readable analysis of the battle and the major players and avoided being bogged down by excessive details and analysis. So although a "general history" I found it contained exactly what the initiate to The Battle of Gettysburg needed to comprehend the scope and importance of the battle.

The book is filled with quotes from many sources, from the legendary such as Robert E. Lee to the relatively unknown. This later group includes two young adults who, as civilians living in Gettysburg, published first hand accounts of the battle many years later. Iain has a real knack for weaving the stories and words of those involved into the narrative, which brings the story to life in a real way. Rather than an academic treatment of the regiments, charges, and skirmishes of the battle, the book puts a human face to the battle and allows the reader to feel a emotional connection to the events.

Beyond the well detailed chronicling of those three days, the book gives a brief analysis of the importance of the conflict and it's impact on our country even today. By no means is this a detailed historical treatment and debate but it simply attempts to highlight other historians have argued is the lasting impact on our country.

In addition to wonderful coverage of the battle itself, the book is packed full of period photographs, beautiful artwork and military maps. The book is a wonderful reference for any miniature gamer looking to recreate the units of this period in miniature. It is the sort of book you could sit and page through, stopping to analyze pictures from the period or to admire the dynamic and beautiful artwork by Don Troiani.

Although marketed as a young adult book I think most fans of civil war history and especially novice historical gamers like me will find this book thoroughly readable and a wonderful visual and historical reference. I know this book will become a permanent part of my historical wargaming reference collection and see use for many years to come.Jamiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14723565744491156292noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2114823305082004214.post-65508554475447713902013-04-25T09:26:00.001-07:002013-04-25T10:53:39.291-07:00Gettysburg, 1 July 1863. Finally, after a year of planning, modeling, painting, and cursing the size of the project, the 2013 Guns Of April Gettysburg game has been played out. Last Friday night at Adepticon, most of the GOA team gathered and threw down on our table that had traveled all the way from Maryland on the Battlefront Miniatures truck. As is always the way with big, collaborative projects, there were a few hiccups along the way. These hiccups included:

• One team member unable to deliver his four regiments of Confederates to Rob before he left for the show. Thankfully Merle had thought to bring some spares and after a frenzied hour of flocking, we had enough modes to cover the shortfall.

• Yours truly forgetting to bring his Guns Of April shirt. Not much that could be done about it, but rest assured I did not play sans shirt.

• The rental truck containing our tables and terrain leaked as it traveled through the wild storms that lashed the Midwest on their journey out to the show. The boards suffered the worst of it, with the surface buckling in a number of places, and the PVA glue being "reactivated" - creating large patches of white on the tables. Fortunately we were able to move a couple of tree bases around to cover the most glaring of these spots. As you can see in the table shot above, the overall effect wasn't diminished as the eye was drawn to the details, filling in "the gaps" as it were.

We had six team members playing: Dave P, Joe, Merle, and myself for the Union - Rob and Jamie for the Confederates. Fortunately Merle's buddies Chris and Jay volunteered to fill the command shoes for the Rebels, and we set off with four players aside.

The Confederates fielded four Infantry Brigades, two of them supported by attached artillery.
The Union fielded three Infantry Brigades, one Cavalry Brigade, and one Artillery Brigade.

UPDATE: I forgot to mention we had over 1,000 models on the table at one point, not too shabby ; )

Anyway, on to the photos!
A great command roll saw the Iron Brigade barrel down the pike towards Archer's Brigade (their historical counterparts in the battle).

At the start of the second turn, two of the Confederate Brigades appeared to the north. It was with no small amount of consternation that the Union realized, with some good rolling, that the rebels could break the back of the North early on. We also had plenty of onlookers for the game, anywhere from 5-25 at a time. Not too bad for a convention founded on sci-fi and fantasy gaming.

By now the Union Artillery Brigade had entered play but unfortunately, due to some miscalculations, found itself up against a fence, still limbered up. The following turn saw the gunners handily beaten in combat by the boys from the South. Without a single shot being fired, the Union's much-valued support was removed from the table.

Looking north we can see the Buford's Cavalry and a Union Infantry Brigade (commanded by Merele) building a solid defensive line across the Railway Cut, hoping to prevent a breakout by Jamie's Confederates.

About two thirds of the way through the battle, you can see (roughly) the state of affairs. The Union right is pretty solid, while it's left is seriously strung out and under attack from two sides. Also, most of the cookies have been eaten ; )

On the western end of the Union line the 2nd Wisconsin are under assault from rebels to the left and front. Thanks to some surprising dice rolling I was able to bust out a paraphrase of the quote that lead to the Iron Brigade's nickname (McClellan to Hooker: "What troops are those fighting in the Pike?" Hooker replied, "[Brigadier] General Gibbon's brigade of Western men." McClellan stated, "They must be made of iron."). After three combat phases, however, the 2nd Wisconsin finally failed their break test and were forced to retire.

And finally, Joe's Irish Brigade (after four turns of nothing but one move per turn) were able to create a new defensive line, just as the Iron Brigade were broken and started to fall back.

In the end, we all agreed that it had been an excellent game and that the result was a minor Union victory, but not so strong as to cause the Confederates to buy us beers. There was a little bit of backslapping and a few huzzahs, before we launched straight into discussions about next year's project. But more on that later...

Thanks to everyone who has been following this blog for your comments and support along the way : )
I have completed my brigade ready for Adepticon with time to spare. That makes me very happy. For all of you tournament and weekend warrior gamers I am sure you are intimately familiar with staying up until 4am the night before the big event. Then it takes you a week to recover from all the work you put into your army and you don't touch a paint brush for 6 months. Yep, that's right then you are immediately behind on your next project only to repeat the same process over and over again.

Well, as I have gotten older and it became a little bit harder to recover from long weekends I bust my hump the week or two before the event so I can recover and enjoy my gaming weekend. So, with 4 days before our big American Civil War battle I have finished my contribution to the game including a handful of scenery.

Here are some pictures of the brigade in all its glory. Enjoy and if you are going to Adepticon be sure to come by the game and say 'helllo'.
I wanted to represent the 14th Tennessee taking mass casualties because of the major losses that they took at Gettysburg. I hope the above photo translates well with the majority of the color company being cut down as they marched, and the brave few in the rear rank trying to keep the colors from hitting the ground.
Now that the episode has aired, I can talk openly about the photographs I posted earlier. I recently joined a dual impression American Civil War reenactment group portraying the 28th GA and 123rd NY. They have a long history of performing in movies and TV shows so they were asked to help with the Conan O'Brien Show. The idea was Conan wanted to join the unit and see if he had the skills to become one of the few and proud reenactors. :)

I thought you would enjoy the skit and it was a fun day filming. Here is the link.
I worked a half-a-day on Good Friday and decided to base all of my elements that we ready for it. I was originally going to base my entire army at the end and planned to take one full week basing my stuff. Well...........24 hours later and nearly 75% of my army has scenic effects applied to them. I was going into Friday evening with mixed feelings. First of all, I was getting quite burned out of highlighting blue and black and took the basing project as a nice break. I was worried about whether or not I would be able to complete my overall task but when I finished in an evening it excited me about completing my project. So, the 'distraction' ended up reinvigorating my willpower to finish my infantry. So, I have 18 days in which to finish highlighting 60 miniatures and base them. A very possible goal if I don't have too many life issues get in the way. Enough of the blather. Here are some pictures........

Just before Christmas last year, Rob Chandler and I brought our Salamanca table (form our 2012 game) from the Battlefront Miniatures office in North East, MD, down to Dropzone Games (in Glen Burnie, MD) so we could build a few new ridges and add a bunch more flock to the table. Mid-summer Pennsylvania is a little bit greener than mid-summer Spain ; )

Anyway, on Thursday we had the chance to finally put flock on everything, and it turned out to be a LOT of flock! We used the contents of three of the GW Scenery kits (all supplied by the awesome guys at Dropzone), plus about half a shaker of some dark green turf from Woodland Scenics.

Rob and I were pretty excited about the look of the table, so we just had to put all of our painted models on the table. To be honest, we started with just one regiment, but couldn't help ourselves. You know how it is...

Here's a shot of my dismounted cavalry troopers crouched behind their picket fence, horse holder in the background.

Two regiments face off at almost point blank range. Not particularly "realistic", but good for photos.

And a final shot with Rob looking over it all.

More photos next week once we have everything else in place. We hope you like it so far.

Cheers
But work on the boys of Virginia has continued with two more infantry regiments and an artillery piece completed. The cavalry is half done (horses finished, now for the riders) and then I'll be moving on to the command stands, the final infantry regiment, dismounted cavalry and some disruption markers probably in that order. I've got 4 week left so that is plenty of time, right?
All in all I'm happy with the product so far even though I would much rather have been further along at this stage. Who knows, maybe this will get me back to painting some larger army projects for a change.

I have had a busy few weeks including a trip to Tennessee to purchase my American Civil War reenacting clothing and equipment followed by a TV filming. More information to follow........

Here are a few pictures of myself at my first day of American Civil War reenacting. We are in Resaca, GA at the site of the future Battle of Resaca to occur in May.

A borrowed musket, cartridge box, and cap box. I am learning the drums so eventually the borrowed tools of war will not be needed. I know. I know. Too old and too fat for the drums but I have always wanted to learn a musical instrument.

I liked this pictures showing the differences in uniforms between the sack coat and frock coat that the 1st Sgt is wearing. You may also notice the difference in blue between the coats in the foreground and the corporals coat.

Once I put away my big boy toys it was time to pick up the brush and paint my little boy toys.

I have been averaging about 6 completed miniatures a day and need to maintain this pace in order to finish everything in time. Not an impossible task but will challenge my mental willpower painting all this blue and black. :)

I managed to finish one regiment of the Irish Brigade and all of my dismounted cavalry. My biggest challenge is finishing my Zouaves so I decided to tackle them this weekend. Hopefully I will have 12 done this evening and another 12 completed Monday and Tuesday night. This will leave me 2 x 30 man regiments to highlight and 1 x 24 man regiment to highlight.

In order to keep me motivated when I'm so close, but yet so far, I decided to take a couple of shots of the assembled Iron Brigade thus far.

Here are all the boys, two regiments in firing line, three regiments in march, one squadron of cavalry (both mounted and dismounted), plus my command base and a few casualty markers. 173 models in all.

And here's a closer look at the last regiment to be finished, sandwiched in between the only two completed units ; )

Only a month to go!

Cheers
